GOODNA BYPASS – ACCESS TO MOGGILL AND
MOGGILL ROAD –SPECIAL MEETING
Do you want
significantly more traffic on Moggill Road? Probable gridlock at the Kenmore
Roundabout? This could result from the construction of the Proposed Goodna
Bypass, if an on/off ramp is provided at Priors Pocket.
What Moggill needs is an alternate exit to places beyond without encouraging
more traffic going into Kenmore.
Because of the above
REPA has joined with the Moggill Community
Association (MCA) to call a public meeting at the Kenmore State High School on
the 22nd July 2004 at 7:30 pm to highlight community concerns about
the impact of potential additional traffic on Moggill Road. The meeting will
canvas public support for widening the Ipswich Motorway along its route in
preference to constructing the proposed Goodna Bypass,
which would come through Priors Pocket and require two bridges across the
Brisbane River.
I have been attending meetings of the MCA with this in mind. Ian Cameron, a
retired engineer, who was Cameron McNamara now Kellogg, Brown & Root and
Chairman of the Pullen Pullen Catchment Group and also a member of REPA has done
a review of the proposal and prepared a report which shows that the construction
of the 7.8 km Goodna Bypass is likely to cost approximately $600 - 650 million
to build from Dinmore to the Logan Motorway as against other estimates which say
that the widening of the full 20 km length of the Ipswich Motorway from Dinmore
to Rocklea could be achieved for a figure of $600 million. Most of the cost
would result from the constraints of the proposed route to avoid existing major
facilities and follows an alignment which for a significant length is well below
the level of either the 1974 flood or a 1 in 100 year flood.
Bruce Flegg and Margaret de Wit are concerned about these proposals. The
Queensland Main Roads Dept preferred strategy is to widen the Ipswich Motorway.
Cameron Thompson (Blair) and Michael Johnson (Ryan) at present support the
Federal Government initiative to construct the Goodna Bypass in preference to
widening the Motorway. The activities may be related to the coming Federal
Election.
The MCA are convening a public
meeting at the Kenmore State High
School for the 22ndJuly
2004 to rally public support against the Goodna Bypass.
REPA is supporting this initiative and encourages you to attend this meeting to
demonstrate your opposition to such a proposal. There have been previous
meetings about similar issues raised at an earlier time. We need your continued
support.
Issues which have been
raised at preliminary meetings include:-
·
Opposition to any
initiatives which potentially increase the flow of traffic along Moggill Road to
the Kenmore Roundabout.
·
Future development of a Western Brisbane ring road.
·
The construction of the Moggill Sub-arterial
Road at least from Centenary Highway to Moggill Road.
See you at the meeting at Kenmore State High
School.
